Top 5 Myths About Mold

When it comes to keeping your home safe, telling the difference between mold myths and facts can be hard. To help, we’ve debunked the top five myths about mold below.

Myth #1: You can keep your house completely mold-free

All homes provide an environment for growing mold, at least in one area. They’re dark, damp, warm, and in many cases, they already have some mold spores present. As a result, it’s just about impossible to keep your home completely mold-free.

Mold spores linger in the air outside our homes and enter every time we open a door or window. However, infestations don’t become a problem until the mold finds one of those dark and humid spaces within your house to grow and flourish.

Myth #2: Mold is always visible

Mold is actually a living microbe. This means that you need a microscope to see individual growths. As a result, you won’t always see mold when it’s growing inside your home — especially if it’s in a smaller area or in the early stages of an infestation.

When mold does appear visibly in your home, however, you may misidentify it for something else. Oftentimes, what you might think is speckles of dust or dirt in the the back of your bathroom closet is actually mold.

Myth #3: Once mold is removed, it won’t come back

Since mold spores are always entering our homes and our homes always have conditions to support growth, mold always has the chance of coming back. This means that even after you treat and remove a spot of mold, it’s important to continuously check to make sure it hasn’t started regrowing.

Myth #4: You shouldn’t worry about a small spot of mold

Even though you may only see one small spot of mold, the chances are that there is more there. After all, not all mold is visible. This means that even if you’re only seeing a small spot of mold, you should work to immediately check the rest of your house and begin working to treat the problem. Otherwise, it can quickly fester into a full-blown infestation.

Also, a common black mold myth is that all black mold varieties can lead to severe illness. However, there are several varieties of mold that can release toxins. As a result, it’s important to treat all mold spots, even the smallest.

Myth #5: You can clean up mold infestations yourself

Technically, you can clean a mold spot by yourself — however, the fix will only be temporary. As long as you’re using either homemade or store-bought mold killers, you’re only treating the area and mold showing at that time.

When it comes to
mold removal, the reason it’s important to hire a professional is because prevention is just as important as treating (if not more than). An expert in mold removal will be able to find the source of the infestation — such as a leak causing constant dampness — and will be able to advise a schedule for regular treatments. This will help prevent mold in the future.

Furthermore, the industrial chemicals and procedures used by professionals are also better for removal and will help kill all of the mold, rather than killing only some and causing the remaining growths to become immune to the chemicals used.
