What's Worse? Black Mold or the Chemicals Used to Kill It?

The health effects of mold are not currently well documented. While about 30 species have been shown to have negative effects on the respiratory system, there are more than 250,000 unstudied species of mold/fungus on the planet.
We simply have not had enough time to completely understand what mold exposure does to a human beings over time. That said, if you are experiencing symptoms as a result of mold in your air, you should seek a professional mold inspection to determine if remediation is required.
Regarding the chemicals used: most firms, if compliant with IICRC protocols, are using a biocide or fungicide that can cause harm. However, there is a list of EPA approved chemical compounds for use in residential and commercial settings that are safe to treat mold. Ask your licensed mold remediator to produce the EPA registration number of the chemical they use if you have a specific worry. Some chemicals used to treat mold can be highly caustic, and we'd much rather have mold in our home vs those chemicals!
A lot of agencies recommend using a bleach solution to kill mold. As a consumer, you should NEVER use bleach on mold. Bleach will in fact bleach mold, but it will not kill it. Bleach will weaken the protein shell of a mold spore, and it will send out hyphal fragments and reproduce. By cleaning with bleach you will make your mold problem worse.
Most contractors should also take the time to make sure surfaces are returned to a normal Ph level between 4–6 after remediation if a harsh chemical has been used. Honestly, majority of them will not take the time to verify that and will move on with the next job.
At Mold Masters we use a organic, green, naturally-occurring solution that will not only kill mold, but it also mechanically breaks it down without any harsh additives. This is the most healthy way to kill mold for you, your family, and your pets.
Regardless of your situation, you as a consumer are allowed to ask questions of whomever you are working with, and what chemicals they are using in your home or business. Most contractors are happy to share their process with you, but some contractors will simply say "Trust our process." and offer no further explanation.
